Encyclo-Media™:

Encyclo-Media 30 will be held Thursday, October 7, and Friday, October 8, 2010 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

Our annual Encyclo-Media™ offers over 100 breakout programs and 250 exhibits that demonstrate curriculum design, engaging learning experiences tailored to individual needs of students, new uses of technology, and more. Over 3,000 library media specialists, reading teachers, gifted and talented teachers, counselors, and instructional technology leaders attend Encyclo-Media™.

New Information Literacy PASS Standards:

On May 27, 2010, the Oklahoma State Board of Education approved the new Information Literacy PASS standards. Governor Brad Henry approved the change on June 21, 2010. The new Oklahoma standards are also the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st Century Learner. They address the increasingly complex nature of information and the skills our students need to succeed in the modern world.

Professional Development:

Library Media/ITV provides high-quality professional development opportunities that include practical approaches to library collection development, copyright and censorship issues, emerging technologies, and strategies infusing curriculum with information literacy objectives from Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) standards. School libraries may register to use the Digital Prairie online databases, which permit students, teachers, and parents access to full-text articles and other reference resources.

Instructional Television (ITV):

As of May 30, 2011, we will no longer be providing instructional television programming.  OETA will continue to broadcast educational programs during this time slot, including shows such as NOVA and Colonial Williamsburg, but the programs we have provided in the past will no longer be available.  Because we are no longer contracting with these vendors, you will have to erase any tapes you have made of this programming at the end of this school year.  Please click here to see a list of series and titles that must be erased.
Oklahoma School Library Media Programs:

Our school libraries launch students into a world of new knowledge by providing instant access to exciting books, online resources, and emerging technologies.  They provide equal opportunities to all students for learning.

Certified school library media specialists are an essential part of a school's faculty, partnering with educators to connect 21st century learners with resources.  They empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and ethical users of information.
An Effective School Library:
  • Offers a wide variety of materials-reference, fiction and nonfiction-in a broad range of reading levels.
  • Provides access to current information by integrating new technologies into the curriculum.
  • Is cost-effective, allowing many readers access to one book.
  • Allows the library media specialist to team with teachers to create and present lessons.
