What is Personnel Development (PD)?

The System of Personnel Development (PD) is:

  • a vital component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Oklahoma State Improvement Plan for Special Education
  • a vehicle for collaborating on professional development activities for personnel who work with students with disabilities (e.g., general and special educators, related services providers, administrators, parents and other providers);
  • a method of identifying personnel needs and an accountability tool for allocating and using resources;
  • a means of empowering those responsible for education through quality training and support; and
  • a procedure for disseminating promising materials and practices derived from educational research and demonstration projects.

Activities

PD implements and supports activities related to:

  • recruitment and retention of personnel;
  • maintenance of data on personnel and professional development;
  • professional standards and certification;
  • alternative training methods;
  • adequate supply of personnel;
  • personnel preparation and continuing education; and
  • fostering collaborative partnerships for personnel development.
